The true meaning of Christmas
Why did Jesus come to earth?
The Bible clearly states that we can never earn salvation by our own efforts, it can only be received as a free gift. The Apostle Paul wrote, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” - his perfect standard, and “The wages of sin is death.” However, he then adds, “but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”* That really is good news! God loves us so much that he took the initiative to provide the remedy for our hopeless situation – and it’s free! God did this by sending his Son Jesus into our troubled world as a human being. He was born of a virgin and lived a perfectly sinless life. Because he is both human and divine, when he willingly gave his life on the cross, he paid the price for our sin, taking upon himself the condemnation we deserve. Then he conquered death by rising from the grave. Thus, we can be forgiven; reconciled to God, and have eternal life.
If this has touched your heart, you can talk to God in prayer along these lines:
- Confess that you have often failed to keep God’s law, and gone your own way.
- Thank the Lord Jesus for taking the punishment you deserve, and ask him to forgive you.
- Trust him to be your Saviour, and commit your life to him as your Lord.
- Ask to be filled with his Holy Spirit, who will help you to follow and serve him.
If you pray with real sincerity, God will respond by forgiving you; accepting you as his precious child, and granting you eternal life.
